Somali Defenders Commemorates World Refugee Day at Waberi District Center

Somali Defenders, a national women-led human rights organization, commemorated World Refugee Day with a meaningful event held at the Waberi District Center jointly co-hosted by Somali Defenders (SD), African Refugee Women-led Network (ARWNET) and Waberi district Administration under the global theme “Solidarity with Refugees.” The event brought together refugees, community leaders, women’s rights activists, government representatives, and civil society organizations in a show of unity and commitment to upholding refugee rights in Somalia.
The commemoration highlighted the challenges faced by refugees and asylum seekers in Somalia, including lack of access to basic services, documentation issues, and exposure to discrimination and violence. Refugee women and youth shared personal testimonies that underscored the urgent need for protection, inclusion, and empowerment.
Speaking at the event, Ms. Fardowsa Abdi Siyad, chairwoman of Somali Defenders, emphasized the importance of localizing refugee support efforts:
“We stand in solidarity with refugees not just in words, but through action. Refugees deserve dignity, rights, and the opportunity to rebuild their lives. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to advocate for refugee inclusion in national policies and local development plans.”
The event featured cultural performances by refugee youth, and an exhibition of songs by a district music band, symbolizing resilience and self-reliance. Participants also called for stronger collaboration between the host community, local authorities, and humanitarian actors to ensure the protection and full participation of refugees in Somali society.
Somali Defenders reiterated the need for a refugee response that is gender-sensitive, community-led, and rooted in human rights principles.
